In general, there is no special preparation needed to get an X-ray. A broad recommendation is that you wear loose-fitting clothes for greater comfort.

During the X-ray, you might need to hold a part of your body in a certain position until the scan is complete. The technician might ask you to sit, stand, or even lie down, depending on the body part that is being scanned.

How do I prepare for an ultrasound?

3
Preparation for an ultrasound varies depending on which part of the body is being examined, but here are the most common requirements:

  • Abdominal ultrasounds typically require fasting for 8-12 hours beforehand.
  • Pelvic ultrasounds usually require a full bladder.
  • Obstetric ultrasounds in early pregnancy also need a full bladder, but later in pregnancy (after about 20 weeks) this isn't necessary.
  • Transvaginal ultrasounds require an empty bladder, so you'll be asked to urinate just before the exam.
  • Remove jewelry from the area being scanned, as metal can interfere with the procedure.

Your healthcare provider at Be Well will give you specific instructions when you schedule the appointment.

What happens during an ultrasound?

When going to your ultrasound appointment, you’ll lie on an examination table and the sonographer (technologist) will apply a clear, water-based solution on the area that will be scanned to help the sound waves travel better. After that, the technologist will move a handheld device applying gentle pressure, which might feel uncomfortable. Fortunately, sonogram consultations are not long, with an average duration of 15-30 minutes. You may resume activities immediately after as usual.
